Parkway SleepHealth Centers Announces Exclusive Availability of Provent Sleep Apnea Treatment

(Cary, N.C.) The Triangle’s innovative leader in the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, Parkway SleepHealth Centers, is proud to announce it has been chosen as the exclusive regional distributor for Provent, a popular new clinically proven treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. Hailed as a breakthrough alternative to CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), a common and effective -- yet somewhat unpopular -- treatment for sleep apnea, Provent therapy uses a proprietary MicroValve design to build a positive pressure in the airway when patients exhale, keeping it consistently open. The Provent device is comprised of a small, discreet strip attaching over the nostrils with a hypoallergenic adhesive and is disposable.

“As an alternative to traditional CPAP therapy, sleep apnea sufferers can now use Provent, which is great news for the roughly 20% of CPAP users who are unsuccessful with the therapy,” Donna Manjorin, LPN, RPSGT, Practice Director for Parkway SleepHealth Centers said.

Manjorin explained that with the lack of any need for tubes, masks, or bulky CPAP machines running all night next to a patient’s bed, Provent therapy is much less cumbersome and attractive to sleep apnea patients and their sleep partners. The simplicity of the device is also much more convenient to patients when traveling versus dragging along a CPAP machine, she added.

“If a patient is somewhere without electricity, like camping, they can get a good night’s sleep with Provent,” she said.

Provent Therapy has been proven to decrease obstructive sleep apnea, which in turn will increase patient energy, reduce daytime sleepiness, reduce snoring, and lead to a better quality of sleep. As Provent is currently prescription-based, only licensed, experienced providers can distribute the treatment. Parkway SleepHealth Centers is one of two authorized distributors in North Carolina, and the only provider in the Eastern half of the state.

“Provent will not be the only treatment prescribed by our medical team to deal with sleep apnea,” Parkway Medical Director Khaleel Ahmed, MD, D,ABSM, said, adding, “It is certainly an exciting new option for many of our patients and fits in with our model of carefully researching and implementing the latest medical breakthroughs for personalized care.”

Each patient referred to Parkway by their primary physician, as well as those patients coming in to Parkway on their own, is provided an individual consultation. Based upon the results found by Parkway’s medical team, a patient may be recommended for an overnight sleep study in a state-of-the-art sleep testing facility to find out exactly what is wrong and determine the best approach to a customized, comprehensive treatment plan with ongoing care.
