Myers Bigel Names David Purks as Managing Partner

RALEIGH, N.C.--Myers Bigel Sibley & Sajovec, P.A. (Myers Bigel), the largest independent patent law firm in the Carolinas, is proud to announce David Purks has been named the new Managing Partner. Purks succeeds Jim Cannon, who served as Managing Partner during a time of growth and national recognition. “Our firm has maintained a unique ability to provide  long-term continuity of lawyers working on client matters, which brings with it invaluable knowledge of specific client technologies and inventors, as well as USPTO standards, practices and expectations,” Cannon said.

During Cannon's tenure, the firm continued to carefully add new lawyers having significant experience in key areas of interest to clients.  The firm was ranked among the nation’s best in both the number and quality of patents secured for clients. It climbed to number two in the country for quality in the consumer electronics/discretionary category in rankings by IAM/Ocean Tomo, and reached number 35 in the IFI CLAIMS Patent Services list of Top 50 firms who achieved the most patents for clients. Myers Bigel also achieved a prestigious Tier 1 designation in the 2013 “Best Law Firms” rankings from U.S. News and Best Lawyers.

Incoming Managing Partner David Purks explained that national rankings from respected independent groups like IAM are validation of what Myers Bigel clients have seen in terms of quality patents.

“With the economy getting tighter, companies are focusing on the bottom line, looking for a cost-effective path in patent services that provides broad enforceable protection for their inventions,” he said.

As an example, Purks pointed to his firm attracting new clients experienced with building domestic and international patent portfolios who are motivated to make changes by their continued drive for improvement in services.

“Clients have come to realize that a poorly written patent application can result in a very expensive prosecution process,” he said, adding, “Whereas if a patent is well-written it may be allowed to issue quicker and result in a dramatic reduction in total cost, avoiding costs arising from lengthy prosecution cycles of patent office rejections and responses or appeal processes.”

Purks is active in Myers Bigel’s Electronics/Computer and Litigation practice groups, drawing on a background that includes working at McDonnell Douglas developing electronic communication and guidance systems for aircraft, and serving as former Associate General Counsel with Ericsson Inc. where he was responsible for patent litigation, licensing, and patent preparation and prosecution.

A member of the North Carolina Bar and the Colorado Bar, Purks is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. He has been practicing patent law since 1994, focusing his practice on patent prosecution in the areas of software, telecommunications, electronics, and microelectronics, as well as client counseling of startup and medium-size technology companies.

Every attorney at Myers Bigel is a substantive working patent lawyer, something unique within the legal community. The firm, which is organized as an inverted pyramid without dedicated ‘rain makers’ passing-off new work to inexperienced attorneys, provides clients with the same experienced, dedicated attorney who works with them from development of the patent application through all stages of the domestic and international filing and approval processes.

With a full-service IP practice, Myers Bigel provides expertise in all intellectual property areas, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents, with attorneys well-versed in prosecution and litigation to enforce or defend patent, trademark and copyright claims.

The firm operates out of the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina, representing corporate and university clients located in the Carolinas, throughout the Southeast, across the United States, and in Europe and Asia. For more information, visit www.myersbigel.com.
