Myers Bigel Attorneys Presenting "Assault on Biotech" at Second Annual Triangle Biotech Research Symposium August 20

RALEIGH, N.C.-- Attorneys from Myers Bigel Sibley & Sajovec, P.A. (Myers Bigel), the largest independent patent law firm in North Carolina, will be discussing recent legal developments of relevance to the biotech community at the upcoming Second Annual Triangle Biotech Research Symposium August 20. Alice Bonnen, Ph.D., and Robert Schwartzman, Ph.D. will be presenting, "Assault on Biotech: Recent Case Law Impacting Biotechnology Inventions" at the event taking place at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Research Triangle Park.

"Our location in RTP allows us to service global biotechnology leaders and innovative startups as well as share best practices in intellectual property protection in continuing education events, seminars, and national and regional symposia," said Myers Bigel Managing Partner David Purks.

This is the second year Myers Bigel attorneys have presented at the Triangle Biotech Research Symposium, a full day of information sharing in the form of a cross-silo symposium and trade show to discuss hypotheses, cross-pollinate ideas and network with peers to create potential partnerships and collaborations in the future.

In their presentation, Drs. Bonnen and Schwartzman will be discussing decisions affecting subject matter eligibility; self-replicating technology and patent exhaustion and licensing; and the practical issues raised in these decisions and possible strategies for addressing them.

In addition to the Myers Bigel presentation on intellectual property case law, other topics to be covered at the event include therapeutics, agriculture, bioinformatics, drug and device discovery, enabling technologies and translational medicine.

"The analytical and clinical nature of the Symposium is a solid fit for our legal team's scientific knowledgebase," Purks explained.

The attorneys in the various Myers Bigel practice groups - Biotechnology, Chemical and Pharmaceutical; Biomedical Technology; Electrical/Computer; Mechanical; Litigation; and Trademark - have experience and science or engineering degrees in a particular technology, in addition to their law degrees. This rare perspective helps them deal with the unique technical nuances of an invention and better relate with scientists and academics in order to successfully obtain patents with real world value.

Dr. Bonnen, for example, received her Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University (Botany and Plant Pathology); Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota (Plant Physiology); and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Pathology from Michigan State University. Her practice is focused on the preparation and prosecution of patents in the biotechnological fields; additionally, Dr. Bonnen prepares and prosecutes plant patent applications and applications for plant variety protection. She received her Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University in 2004.

Dr. Schwartzman received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in pharmacology from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. His practice is concentrated in the area of U.S. and foreign patent prosecution in the biotechnological, chemical, and pharmaceutical arts. Dr. Schwartzman received his Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center and has worked in the patent law field since 1996.

Both Dr. Bonnen and Dr. Schwartzman are members of the N.C. Bar Association and are registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The Second Annual Triangle Biotech Research Symposium is co-sponsored by The BioPharma Research Council, producing symposia and forums for researchers from academic and pharma labs, government, suppliers and nonprofit groups since 2009. By building diverse programming and inviting the entire biotech/pharma community to participate, the organization is focused on helping make connections affecting the development of healthcare breakthroughs.
