NC COIN, Shanahan Law Group, NC Biotechnology Center Announce Start Up and Early Stage Legal Series

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- NC COIN (North Carolina Center of Innovation for Nanobiotechnology), Shanahan Law Group, and the NC Biotechnology Center announce the return of the popular, informative five-week Start Up and Early Stage Legal Series. “Pre-Formation and Formation Issues” is the topic of the June 18 seminar kicking-off the series to be led by Henry Kopf III of Shanahan Law Group, a boutique law firm specializing in addressing the complex needs of businesses in our ever-changing world. “COIN is comprised of active and engaged technology leaders like Henry Kopf and his fellow attorneys at Shanahan Law Group who want to help grow the innovation economy in our state,” said COIN Executive Director Joe Magno.


Kopf, who led the well-received Early Stage Legal Series this past winter, is the holder of four U.S. patents and corresponding international patents on the processing of biological fluids, improved infant formula, and optimization of filtration processes. Prior to his legal career he co-founded businesses focused on development and commercialization of technology used for the purification and separations of liquids for biotechnology and pharmaceutical applications.

“The fact that my background includes experience as an entrepreneur, and all the hits and misses that come with it, in addition to my law degree has helped me navigate clients through the treacherous waters of starting and building businesses the right way to avoid problems later on,” Kopf explained.

For example, he pointed to the simple yet often overlooked task of ensuring contracts and agreements are drawn-up correctly in order to avoid litigation down the line and minimize business disruptions when disputes due occur.

Kopf, who concentrates his practice in the areas of business litigation, business advisement, constitutional takings, administrative law, and technology law will be leading the June 18 seminar in addition to “Hiring and Doing Business” June 25; “Protecting Intellectual Property” July 9; “Fundraising and Exits” July 16; and “International Business Transactions” July 23. The series will also include special guest speakers on select dates to provide additional insight and expertise.

The series is designed for professionals involved in startups as well as established businesses and nonprofit organizations. Cost to participate in each seminar is $10 for NC COIN members, $20 for non-members and free for students with valid ID. The series will be held at the NC Biotechnology Center, 15 T W Alexander Drive.
