RESEARCH TRIANGLE, N.C. -- Tiger Eye Sensor, Inc., the leader in the hands-free, wearable, personal security device market, has been selected as a finalist in the Small Business Administration (SBA) 2015 InnovateHER Business Challenge. As a finalist, the company will compete for a total of $30,000 in prize money during a live pitch competition in Washington, D.C. on May 8th as part of SBA’s National Small Business Week.
“This is a great opportunity for Tiger Eye to spread the word about our Tiger Eye Security Sensor personal security device, and at the same time bring attention to the ongoing issue of violence against women,” CJ Scarlet, company founder, said.
Scarlet pointed to the recent controversy over the Rolling Stone rape story and subsequent fallout from the article’s source being discredited.
“As troubling as the issues were surrounding that story and its inaccuracies and fabrications, the more frightening aspect is the effect it will have on assault victims who now may fear coming forward,” she explained.
Scarlet is herself a survivor of sexual assault who has turned her experience into a lifelong mission of prevention and victim advocacy, including running a child advocacy center for abused children and serving as Director of Victims Issues for the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
This experience gave way to Scarlet’s rise as a technology innovator, developing a new concept in personal security. The Tiger Eye Security Sensor (TESS) is a hands-free device which activates when the wearer calls out for help, connecting with a live operator, warning the perpetrator to leave the scene and summoning police to the user’s GPS location. At the same time, TESS illuminates the area and begins photographing and audio recording events to help identify and prosecute the assailant.
Tiger Eye’s selection for the SBA competition came from a nomination by the Women’s Business Center (WBC) of Fayetteville. Hundreds of businesswomen across the country sent in business plans prior to the event and pitched in person in their local communities; 15 women-led companies were selected to pitch at the SBA event in Washington, DC.
“All the presenters had strong business ideas and concepts. It wasn’t easy for the judges to choose just one nominee. CJ and Tiger Eye had a compelling personal passion for the business and it shined through her presentation and business plan,” Lexi Hasapis, WBC Director said.
Tiger Eye is a majority women-owned, service disabled veteran-owned business committed to developing products like TESS in an effort to make people safer, more secure, and more empowered.
