RALEIGH, N.C. -- Attorney Henry Kopf, founder of Revolution Law (www.revolutionlaw.net),
a boutique firm providing collaborative legal services and advice to
help move businesses forward, spoke to attendees at a two-day Lunch and
Learn series held at the NCSU Technology Incubator on the Centennial
Campus. Kopf co-presented with IP attorney Daniel Becker on September
23, and was asked back to continue conversations about preparing for
fundraising and potential funding sources on September 25. “Attendees
were interested in understanding how corporations operate and make
decisions once an investor becomes involved in the company including the
ability of the founders to control the direction of the company now
that an outside party is involved. Additionally, information on how to
prepare for the fund raising process was covered,” Kopf said.
Many technology based companies in North
Carolina do not truly fit into the traditional VC funding model.
Instead of trying to force-fit themselves into such a model, Kopf
explained, many companies would be better served by seeking funding from
alternate sources including non-traditional angels, grants, and other
approaches related to the Jobs Act or intentionally seeking out VC
funding specifically targeted at their particular business model.
“Instead
of looking at business operations, technology and legal issues
separately, startups and even more established companies need to
understand how legal and business issues interact with each other to
find the most direct path toward short- and long-term growth,” Kopf
said.
The two-day NCSU Lunch and Learn series comes on the heels
of Kopf participating in the highly praised Coastal Connect Entrepreneur
and Capital Conference hosted by UNC-Wilmington’s Center for Innovation
and Entrepreneurship. Revolution Law sponsored the keynote panel
“Starting With the End in Mind” with Kopf introducing a group of
knowledgeable speakers including Doug Ellis, DecisionPoint
International; David Jones, Bull City Venture Partners; Tom
Lotrecchiano, EntreManureShip; Adam Burke, Active Investor from
Charlottesville, VA; George Taylor, NextGlass; and Scott Moody, K4
Connect and AuthenTec.
Earlier this past summer, Kopf led a
five-week Start Up and Early Stage Legal Series of informative, hands-on
classes designed for professionals involved in startups as well as
established businesses and nonprofit organizations held at the NC
Biotechnology Center.
Before embarking on his legal career, Kopf
was the inventor on four U.S. patents and corresponding international
patents and co-founded businesses focused on development and
commercialization of technology used for the filtration, purification
and separations of liquids for biotechnology and pharmaceutical
applications. For more information visit www.revolutionlaw.net or email Henry Kopf at hkopf@revolutionlaw.net.
