RALEIGH, N.C. -- Myers Bigel Sibley & Sajovec, P.A.
(Myers Bigel), the largest independent patent law firm in North
Carolina, has been selected to present “In-House Guide to Patent
Strategy” to members of the Research Triangle Area Chapter of the
Association of Corporate Counsel March 11. The program will be held at
the North Carolina State Bar Headquarters in downtown Raleigh and will
provide Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits for qualified
attendees.
“We are pleased the Programs Committee has chosen our firm to provide
relevant information for in-house law practice dealing with intellectual
property competitive intelligence,” Managing Partner David Purks said.
The upcoming Myers Bigel presentation will provide insight into
strategies for in-house counsel for patent strategy under the America
Invents Act (AIA). Specific topics will include:
• Identifying new inventions, filing considerations both domestic and
foreign; and types of prior art that may impact the patenting decision;
• Considerations when deciding whether to file for patent protection in
view of recent caselaw, and alternatives to patent protection;
• An overview of the timing, costs, strategy and procedures of AIA
procedures for challenging or defending the validity of U.S. patents;
and
• Strategies for responding to non-practicing entities (“NPEs”) under the AIA and under North Carolina’s new statute.
Leading the program will be Lynne Borchers of the firm’s Litigation
Practice Group; James Cannon from the Mechanical Group; and David Hall
from the Electronics/Computer Group. All three are registered patent
attorneys and have experience and focus on technology in addition to
their legal backgrounds.
Borchers, for example, holds an electrical engineering degree and worked
as an electrical engineer at Grumman Aircraft Systems and at Riverside
Research Institute in the areas of design and integration of radar and
electronic countermeasures systems; Canon was a plastic parts designer
and analyst prior to receiving his law degree; and Hall is a former
legal counsel with technology giants Cree, Inc. and Ericsson.
Myers Bigel is active in many organizations in addition to Association
of Corporate Counsel, including the Triangle Intellectual Property Law
Association; NC Bar Association; American Intellectual Property Law
Association; American Bar Association; Association of University
Technology Managers; Licensing Executives Society; and the Carolina
Patent Trademark & Copyright Law Association, among others.
The firm regularly presents CLE opportunities for the legal community as
